Thing 23

Great Blogging!

Was interesting and challenging.  I would participate in a 23 more things on a stick.

Thanks for everything!

Thing22

I plan to visit my blog at least several times a month.  I will add WEb2.0 directory to my list of sites to visit.  I plan to do some of the lessons on Web Junction (mainly during the summer and Christmas vacation).  Now that I have learned about the web 2.0 I plan to stay informed.  Thank you for having this program.  I made me learn things that I was always wishing I had the time to learn.

Thing21

I joined Ning.  After looking at it it seems alot like Facebook.  One advantage to Ning is there is a more professional feel to it while facebook has more of the college wildness feel to it.  I think this will be a good place to social network once I have more time to work on it.  I did join the 23 thing Minnesota site.  It was interesting to see colleagues and friends who are participating in the program.

Thing 20

I joined Facebook about a year ago because my library was reviewing new technologies.  We were all encouraged to sign up and see first hand how students these days communicate.  I signed up and completed my profile.  I don't have many friends because my friends do not belong to institutions that subscribe to Facebook.  I do however get to see how the students communicate on the site.  I have joined various groups and it is an interesting way to get information and learn.  It makes you wonder what will come after Facebook.

Thing 19

Podcasts

This Thing was a little more difficult.  It was hard to find podcasts from the lists that were interesting.  I had much better luck finding podcasts on my own.  Once I found podcasts I liked I had trouble making them work.  I guess I am not a member of the online generaton.

Thing 18

Video of Mas Rover from Youtube. There are many false hits on YouTube. Some keywords describe what is in the video as opposed to what the video is. A nice way of sharing videos. Now if I only had videos to share.

Thing 17

This a great source with lot neat tools.  This is a great use of my tax dollars.

Thing16

Wish I had this in school.  Very useful for keeping on track. I liked the helpful hints and clues the research Project Calculator provided.  Getting my nephews to use it would be another matter.  They have the same attitude most students have "There is plenty of time to do this project".  If you do 23 thins on a Stick again you should put this as thing 2 to keep people on track for completing this very useful and interesting program.

Thing15

I tried PuzzlePirates.  The interaction was fun once I got a handle on how to do it.  I can see why my nephews like playing these interative games so much.  Very addicting - kind of like eating M&Ms.  I can see why libraries are trying to add gaming to their list of services.

Thing14

Library Thing is a good way to share Favorite books. The best thing it does is to let others see what great fun cataloging is. Cataloging is about making information available to people and sharing it no matter what your state in life.

Thing13

This was fun.  I like iGoogle.  Nice clean look!  Easy to edit.  I like changing the look of my portal and iGoogle makes that very user friendly.  It is easy to edit and rearrange.  Google calendar is also fun.  Added moon phases and shuttle launches in a snap.
I wish I could get the counter to work.  This would be a great way to keep me on top of my tasks. I tried Ta-da and Remember the Milk.  Both are no better or no worse than any other task lists I have visited.  After playing with it for only a little while Backpack seems to have the ability to include more of a variety of things into the to do list.

Thing12

This kind of thing is fun as a social sharing tool.  It is depressing to think that news stores become important based on popularity.  It is like being back in high school where only the "cool" stories get reported because that is what people put on their social bookmarking tools.   Since mostly younger people are on the web only topics important to them will get bookmarked.

Thing 11

I have been using delicious for awhile now.  It is a different way of finding information.  It is taking me a little time to get used to it.  My mind does not think in the same way delicious organizes information.  Right now delicious is still in the play stage.  I am still playing with it as opposed to using it for anything important or valuable.  I guess I need to make the time to use it more often to get used to thinking like my nephew.

Thing 10

Wikis are used in my library's consortial group.  It works well for gathering statistics.  It could be difficult if someone deletes something important.  The manual editing can seem uneven because of all of the various styles editing it.  It is also nice to be able to go back and correct all of the typing mistakes i make>

Thing 9

Editing and viewing was much easier in Google Docs than Zoho.  Zoho took me awhile to figure out you had to be in the right mode in order to edit.  In my opinion Zoho is more cluttered and busy than Googledocs.  This type of editing has great potential for any organization for maintaining policy manuals.

Thing 8

Here is my short and dirty list for 23 sticks.  It was fun and easy to use.   This is a great way to share lists with your friends.  Even libraries may be able to use this feature for book lists if you can automate it somehow.

Thing 7

I am not really into either text messaging or IM.  I prefer using the cell phone as a phone.  I like email for any other form of communicating. For me email is easier for a number of reasons one important one is the larger keyboard.  My eyes aren't as young as they once were.

Web conferencing is very useful tool.  People from all over can attend a conference, ask questions and comment all from the convenience of their workplace.

Thing 6

ImageChef.com - Custom comment codes for MySpace, Hi5, Friendster and more ">

This thing has many fun things you can do.  I can't figure out how to get rid of the box with the question mark in it and keep the star.  It seems I can either have both or neither.  I find dealing with images on the web frustrating at best.  This is one area where the Thing on a stick could have had better instructions and aides.

This was nicce.  It explained clearly in easy to use language.  This image stuff is fun as long as the site has adequate explanations on how the use the images.

Thing 5

This is not a fun thing to do.  It is not a user friendly.  Some basic instructions  would have been helpful for the those of us to whom this kind of thing does not come naturally.

This thing is frustrating. I do not deal with digital images on a regular basis. It took me a while to figure out how to get an image into my blog.  My first attempts failed and I had to quit in order to calm down.  I could not copy the image I chose from Flickr so I had to go to the web.

Thing3

I liked the 2 videos explaining RSS feeds.  They both explained the computer terms in everyday language.  Both are great choices for 23 things.  Rss feeds ARE great fun.  I hope my friend likes the Brady Bunch RSS feed I shared with her.

Thing#2

I do not think it really matters what people call the  web 2.0 phenomenon.  What is important is libraries willingness to embrace new technology.   In order for the profession to stay alive we must meet our users where they live.  The thing that seems very daunting to me is how quickly technology changes and how in the heck am I going to keep up with it.

23things on a stick #1

Whew. There was alot of creating of accounts and passwords in order to get to step no.1.  I got through it though.  It feels good to accomplish such a number of challeges.
